Rom was born in New York City. But the values he learned as the son of Catholic immigrants in early 20th-century America have stayed with him. After serving in the U.S. Army Signal Corps during World War II, Rom married, started a family and joined the Knights of Columbus. Today, he is a member of Our Lady of Grace Council 14765 in South Carolina, where he has lived since 2010 with his daughter, Maryann, and her husband. Rom recently shared some advice based on his experiences over the past 105 years. The Knights of Columbus is proud to present these videos with Fred Rom as part of a long tradition of service to the military.

Monsignor Quinn: Champion of the Downtrodden

Monsignor Bernard J. Quinn, an associate member of the Knights of Columbus, served as a military chaplain in France during the First World War. Following a mustard gas attack, Monsignor returned to the Diocese of Brooklyn and received permission to begin a ministry to African American Catholics. Despite attacks against himself and his work by the Ku Klux Klan, Monsignor Quinn’s work would culminate in creating one of the largest childcare services in the State of New York.
